Winter in Mallorca

If you think that Mallorca has nothing to offer during the winter months, you are very wrong. Temperature is often 16-25 degrees! You can actually do almost the same, just with fewer crowds around. You need never be bored on Mallorca during winter. Here are some activities to enjoy from December until March.

Local Festivals. There are plenty of local festivals on the island in winter time. In December, visit Christmas market in Puerto portals and Palma or visit Port Adriano and enjoy its ice themed park. In January, celebrated Three Kings Day in Palma or join to see Sant Antoni and Sant Sebastià festivals. In February take a place the almond fair “Fira de S’Ametler” in Son Servera. And of course Carnival – “Sa Rua” – is celebrated at the end February.

Follow the wine route. Mallorca has over 70 bodegas on the island, so there’s lot of choice if you want to try some of the local wines. The red grape varieties Monastrell, Tempranillo, Manto Negro, white varieties – Macabeo, Chardonnay, Moscatel. Fruit notes (apples, oranges) predominate in the taste of wines, the taste of almonds and apricots is felt. There are plenty of the wineries around the island, where you can buy or try Mallorquin wines. The most famous are these: Bodegas Ribas, Macia Batle, Jose L Ferrer, Son Prim, Miguel Gelabert etc.

Gourmet tour of Mallorca. Mallorca is a food lovers paradise. Mallorca can offer a plenty of ways to enjoy the flavours, from Michelin star restaurants to the local food markets.
You can start your day with Mercat de l’Olivar or the smaller Santa Catalina. In the both markets you will find a plenty of food stands where you can try from traditional Spanish tapas to oysters or sushi. Do not miss to visit San Juan Gastronomic Market. The San Juan Gastronomic Market is a true foodie experience. Here you will find around 17 food stalls serving a variety of options from local food to Thai and Japanese dishes or Spanish typical recipes.

Visit Museums. Mallorca has many interesting museums and galleries. Spend a day or few visiting the most interesting for you or use XMallorca map to double check the closest one. We recommend to visit Sa Brassa Blanca museum, which is located in Alcudia town and can offer experience of imagination, art, nature and culture for a different day here in Mallorca. The Museum Sa Bassa Blanca is located in a beautiful place between sea and mountains, so offers an experience of total work of art in an open-air environment, integrating nature, architecture, land-art and a wide sculpture park. Nowadays, museum Sa Bassa Blanca, receives world-wide visitors, among them 5,000 children and teenagers.

If you are a sport lover, visit Rafael Nadal Xperience Museum. This amazing museum offers a range of activities and experiences such as Formula1, Tennis, Rowing and Mountain Biking. There are plenty of interactive games, 360º virtual reality adventures such as roller coasters, ski jumping or paragliding. There is a section dedicated to history of Tennis as well. The museum is a perfect place for families or groups of friends looking for some activities where you can have fun, play, learn and feel a truly professional athlete.

Visit Markets. Probably, every town in Mallorca has a weekly market. Each market is held on a different day of the week, so there is more than enough opportunity to visit a market on the island during your stay.
Markets are growing vigorously in Mallorca and are a great way to experience some true local culture. The larger markets are following the same model with fresh produce around the main square. Here you will have the best opportunity to check out the Spanish cheese, jams, olive oil and salt offerings. Jewellery, clothing, arts and crafts, household goods can also usually be found.
The markets, which is held in Palma city, are mostly food related. If you would like to see more characterful markets, with a traditional experience, go outside of the capital to the rural areas. In the small rural villiges you will find local produce and crafts sold by authentic Mallorcans.

Play tennis or golf. Schedule some professional golf lessons or tennis lessons during cooler winter months. There are more than 21 golf fields all over the island. The biggest ones are these: Son Termes, Son Muntaner, Real Bendinat, Son Quint, Son Vida and Son Antem. Some courses offer reduced winter green fees. If you seek to be keen on tennis, head to the Guillermo Vilas Tennis Academy in Palmanova or Tennis Mallorca in Magaluf to improve up your game.

Hiking, cycling, skating, rollerblading!  Winter is a perfect time to walk or hike on Mallorca. The Mallorca Hiking Club is a good choice for those who enjoy guided walks. The other option is, “Via Verde – Eco path”. Via Verde (Manacor-Artá Greenway) is 29km long eco-path, which starts in Manacor and leads you till Arta. No motorized traffic is allowed, you can do it by foot, by bike or by horse. The route is secured by solar-powered cameras. Via Verde is the only one in the Balearics and offers changing scenery along the way. You will pass a restored original railway station buildings in Sant Llorenç, Son Carrio, and Son Servera. It is possible side excursions for visits and refreshments. Hundreds of runners, walkers, cyclists, and horseback riders are taking advantage of this route. It is very popular on Sunday mornings. There are six rest areas with picnic tables and benches, bicycle racks, but no toilet facilities. Hiking boots or special walking shoes is not neccessary, trainers are fine for the path’s good surface. There are signposts in the villages to help you in the route. More than 15,000 shrubs and almost 5,000 new trees such as pine, holm oak, tamarind, and mulberry have been planted along the route. There are information boards which will help you to identify local flora and fauna.

If you like cycling, skating or rollerblading, go to Palma. There is a lovely cycle path starting in Paseo Maritimo and leading to Arenal. The route is just fabulous with a lot of places to stop for a drink or food. Palma’s seafront promenade is perfect for rollerblading and skating.

Jeep experience. Jeep Safaris are one of the most popular activities on the island. Fun and action are guaranteed by driving with a jeep on thrilling off road tracks. Take a twisty road down to Sa Calobra and enjoy fabulous views.

Horse ride. During the winter months, when the holiday island falls into a long sleep, there are some fantastic opportunities to enjoy the views on horseback. Plenty of stables in Mallorca offer rides in the outdoors. All you need is just to decide when and where. The most popular trips are to Cala Mondrago Natural Park on the east coast, in the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana or on the beaches at the bay of Alcúdia.

Visit Rancho Grande, place that offers variety of attractions for the whole family. They are located in very peaceful and natural area in the north of the island, in Son Serra de Marina. Animals, children playing facilities or horse ride tours are just a few fun activities you can undertake during your visit.
Apart of the nearly hundred horses that live on the sight there is a bunch of other animals. You can find here various household animals as beautiful Frisian cow, donkey family, a rabbit, the family of black swans and couple of little ponies as well as more exotic animals – lamas, ostriches, little monkeys, iguana, ara parrots, the white kakadu, and some more smaller birds.
100’s of things to choose from – you must do one! Riding on horseback through the beautiful landscapes of Mallorca is a great experience to remember. They offer to the riders 3 different groups according to their riding ability. “Turbo” is for people with good riding experience, offer possibility to do walk and trot, also there are some gallop (canter) tracks. “Mini turbo” is the group for people with little riding experience. To join this group it is very important to have experience to do a rising trot. “Automatic” is for all beginners or people with less riding experience. Don’t be scared if it is your first time on the horse. It is really easy, just enjoy.
The Ranch is famous for its black pigs. They are one of the biggest black Pig farmers on the whole Mallorca. So in their Mini Zoo there is always a couple of pig mothers with their little piglets. Raised in the farm of the Ranch following the procedures of extensive livestock, the Mallorcan suckling pig can be tasted any day of the week. You can try it in restaurant or as well order it to take away. Home delivery in whole Mallorca is also available.

Visit Palma Aquarium. Palma Aquarium is a commercial aquarium and park that first opened in 2007 in Palma, Mallorca, Spain. The aquarium is the property of Coral World International. The aquarium is 500 m (1,600 ft) from Playa de Palma beach, and includes 55 tanks which are home to over 700 different species from the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A number of different activities are available: “Dive with the Sharks”- an activity for adults and children. “Underwater”- in the summer, visitors over the age of eight can swim in the stingray tank, located in the Mediterranean Gardens. “Shark Sleepover’” – children between the ages of 6 and 16 spend the night camping out in front of the Big Blue, the shark tank. The children can celebrate their birthdays at the park with themed pirate parties.

Do some shopping. Sales, Rebajas, Rebaixes start on January 7th and will last until end of the March. Buy some Spanish brands like Zara, Zara home, Mango, Adolfo Dominguez or Bimba y Lola with up to 70%. The main shopping areas in Palma City are Passeig des Born, Avinguda Jaume III, some small streets around Plaza Mayor and Plaza Cort. La Rambla is famous for its flower sellers.
The hot spots for designer shopping are the ports. Puerto Portals, Port Adriano and Port de Andratx are the top destinations if you are looking for special swimsuit or a glamour dress.

There are 5 big commercial centers in Mallorca. Two El Corte Ingles are located in Palma and offers a huge range of international designers in store. Porto Pi commercial center is located just 2 km from Palma and offers some Spanish brands like Zara, Zara home, Mango or international like Massimo Dutti, Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger and others. FAN is Mallorca’s largest shopping mall, located just a few 5km from the airport. The Mallorca Fashion Outlet is located near Marratxi village, around 12 km from Palma city. Here there are outlets for brands like Levi’s, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, El Corte Ingles, Mango and much more.
