Necropolis of Son Real

Necropolis of Son Real

Necropolis of Son Real is situated next to the sea, in the north – west of Mallorca, Santa Margalida. This necropolis is unique in Mallorca, has over 100 tombs, circular, square and irregular in shape. The buildings started housing dead people from the 7th century BCE until the final years of the Talayotic period.

The cemetery occupies an area of some 1000 m2, where around 130 tombs and more than 400 burials have been recorded. This area has an exceptional natural surroundings, comprising dunes fixed by pine trees. Lot of tombs that once occupied a larger area has been destroyed by the sea. Goods like metal, bone, glass or pottery were left in the graves. The peculiarity of the tombs and the objects of value that they contained suggest that they were intended for the local elites, leaders, who possibly belonged to the community or communities close to the cemetery.
