Puig de Maria

The Puig de Maria and Monastery, Pollenca

The Puig de Maria a small hill that overlooks the town of Pollenca in the North of Mallorca and it is in a 330m high.

The route takes you up a road for most of it but the last part has no vehicle access and is a more rocky path. There aren’t any parking facilities here so just leave your car in Pollensa. The walk is fantastic for stunning views of Majorca’s countryside and the local towns of Pollenca, Port de Pollenca and Alcudia. It will take around 40 minutes to reach the top where you will find lovely monastery and a restaurant. Restaurant serves simple, traditional Mallorquian cuisine. It is a good idea to phone in advanced to reserve a table, especially if you are a large group or you can take your own picnic and sit on one of the stone benches outside the monastery.

Monastery of Virgin Mary was built in 1348 to plead for protection from the Black Death epidemic that was sweeping across Europe and had arrived that year in Mallorca, killing about 20% of the population.

The monastery that can now be seen on this hill has been changed drastically since its construction. The original chapel turned into a monastery and some years later the walls and a defence tower were added.

In Monastery of Virgin Mary you will see three architectural styles – Gothic, Baroque and Gothic Revival. Today Monastery of Virgin Mary offers twelve rooms for overnight stays.

Although the walk is not challenging, would be better to wear sensible shoes such as trainers cause a path can become rocky and slippery. Try to avoid going up on the midday sun during the summer months. Take some water and enjoy a views.
