Sanctuary of Sant Salvador

Sanctuary of Sant Salvador

The Sanctuary of Sant Salvador is located in the South-East of Mallorca, 509 meters above sea level at the highest point of the Serra de Llevant near the town of Felanitx. The hermitage Sanctuary of Sant Salvador has one of Mallorca’s most spectacular inland viewpoints. At every turn, the views are charming.

The Sanctuary of Sant Salvador  was built in 1348, the year of the Black Death, it’s credible that the monks were safe here. The Sanctuary of Sant Salvador is a mystical spot and one of the most important pilgrimage sites on the island after the monastery of Lluc. It is still a popular place of pilgrimage. The building itself remains a fortress, but inside you will find a stunning sculptures and monuments. The church is a strange mix, with showy columns, an elaborate cave nativity scene and a carefully carved stone altarpiece.

The Sanctuary of Sant Salvador has two enormous landmarks – to one side a 14m stone cross, to the other a 35m column topped by a statue of Christ holding out his right hand in blessing. From the statue of Christ you look out towards the Castell de Santueri, a 14th century rock castle built into the cliffs. For the full experience, you can stay the night in one of the cells at the Petit Hotel Hostatgería Sant Salvador.
