The Sanctuary de Lluc is a monastery and pilgrimage site located in north-west of Mallorca. It is located on a height of 525 metres and surrounded by a number of high mountains such as the Puig de Massanella. The Sanctuary of Lluc is important religious site for pilgrims, set in beautiful countryside.
Lluc is the most important pilgrimage site on Mallorca and has been a centre of pilgrimage since the 13th century when an Arab boy, discovered a dark wooden statue of the Virgin in a cleft in the rock. The image was placed in the local church but three times it returned miraculously to its cave. The villagers recognised a message from God and built a monastery.
The Sanctuary of Lluc is a big complex with pilgrims quarters and a very charming rockery & botanical garden is featured in the grounds. You can stay at Lluc but it is more like a hotel than a hermitage the 100 ‘cells’ have bathrooms and there are several restaurants and bars. There you will also find a museum – with the displays of ceramics, coins and paintings.
Sanctuary of Lluc is located centrally in the Serra de Tramuntana so the monastery is often used as a starting point for walking-tours.
