Church of our Lady of Sorrows

The church of our Lady of Sorrows is located in the centre of Manacor. Construction of the church began in the 14th century and wasn’t completed until the 19th century. It was built by Gaspar Bennàssar, José Barceló Runggaldier and rector Rubi. The church is famous of its enormous bell tower, rising high over the town. This impressive parish church is called „Nostra Senyora dels Dolors“ which means „Our Lady of Sorrows“.

The church of our Lady of Sorrows have been very important place in the Islamic period. The construction started right after the Catalan conquest of Mallorca. It was built on the site of the town’s former mosque and has a Gothic and neo-Gothic style. Some parts of the 18th century are still the same, such as the chapels of Sant Antoni and Sant Francesc and the towers. It has a latin-cross floor, ten aisles (five on every side), there is one chapel on every side and the high altar. On every transept arm there are seven chapels. In the 14th century another temple was built, which was finished in the 16th century. The main doorway dates from the end of the 18th century.
